Heart of the Green Challenge: Family Volunteering

America has a long legacy of individuals, families and corporations who give of their time and resources to better each other's lives and communities. The Green Challenge will be driven by volunteers, and family volunteers in particular. For that reason, the Green Challenge will recognize and celebrate those special families that are the very epitome of the giving nature of the American family. One of these special families will be highlighted and honored at each of four major events to be held annually throughout the first three years of the Green Challenge.
The first family to be so recognized is the Mary Ellen and Michael E. Fox, Sr. family. This extraordinary family has been integral to the growth and development of the Bay Area community over the past forty years. With six grown children and 17 grandchildren, the tradition of giving of their time, talent and resources is being extended ever more powerfully into the various communities in which they reside throughout the Bay Area.
In 1965 Mike and Mary Ellen founded M. E. Fox and Company, a leading Budweiser beer distributor serving the Bay Area. M.E. Fox and Company has successfully introduced many other beverages such as Snapple and Red Bull to the Valley and Northern California.
They helped found the National Conference of Christians and Jews (now Community and Justice) and Santa Clara Valley Medical Center Foundation. Their stamp of community involvement has become a model for so many other families. Just a few of the non-profits, educational institutions and associations they have been active in, as members or chairpersons, are:
- EHC Lifebuilders (Emergency Housing)
- Catholic Charities
- HOPE
- United Way of Silicon Valley
- Santa Clara University
- West Valley/Mission College
- Bellarmine College Prep
- YMCA
- YWCA
- Diocese of San Jose
- Tech Museum of Innovation
The Green Challenge is a long-term initiative to inspire and promulgate the spirit of giving back to Mother Earth, of safeguarding our environment and all living things. The children who volunteer now and their children in turn are truly the saviors who hold the Earth’s future in their hands. That’s why we salute the Fox family for passing on the values and traditions that have made our world a better place to live.
